2020 Democratic National Convention

  • by

The 2020 Democratic National Convention is over. Instead of appearing onstage, as participants have in years past, politicians and activists and voters simply recorded videos of themselves; a montage of remotely recorded videos of the state and territorial delegations casting their votes, with backdrops of beaches, farmland and famous municipal landmarks.. The first virtual convention in US history.

The DNC is a reminder that America is a big, diverse country, racked by disaster. One of the first events of the Democratic National Convention, as it began airing on national television on 17 Aug  evening, was an “In Memoriam” segment that mourned the more than 165,000 Americans who have died of COVID-19.

Usually conventions feature stinging put-downs of the rival standard-bearer and the occasional lacerating speech. But the 2020 Democratic convention is notable for the consistency of dire warnings about the other party’s leader.

Rather than hopscotch across a convention floor, the roll call hopped across the country and overseas, with delegates celebrating their home states and territories and making plenty of pitches for Biden. (They still had those placards with the delegation names.)
